This month I had the absolute pleasure of talking with Elizabeth Rider.
In case you don’t know who Elizabeth Rider is, she is one of the most well known Health Coaches in the world who has a passion and drive unlike anyone i’ve ever seen or met before in our space. The insights that Elizabeth holds are not only down to earth, but adoringly genuine and easy to implement. I’m excited to share with you the wealth of information in the wellness industry that is Elizabeth Rider as this month’s expert opinion for Wellpreneurial.

What made you change careers from working in an accounting firm, to becoming a driven and influential health and wellness coach?
It was a gut feeling. I actually liked my job and the people I worked with. I just wasn’t passionate about the work itself. I knew if I stayed that management consulting would be my strongest skillset and that I’d be working 80 hour weeks the rest of my life.
What was the hardest thing you had to overcome when starting out?
So much self-doubt. The endless cycle of being afraid that no one would want to engage my services or that it just simply wouldn’t work out.
What are 3 essential pieces of advice you wish you were told when you were starting your wellness business?
It’s going to take longer than you think, but it’s going to be even better than you imagined.
Watching peers achieve success is a really good thing. I think in the beginning I would feel jealous of people, but then I realized that the more success my peers had the more successful we would all be. A rising tide lifts all boats.
Do everything possible to show up at live events. Conferences, retreats and in person events are absolutely critical to building community within the industry. It took me three years to go to my first live event—I wish I would have done it sooner.
Throughout your journey in building your business in the beginning did you have a mentor or role model that helped to shape your way forward?
Absolutely. In fact, I’ve had quite a few. My friend and mentor Barbara Stanny says that we’re always modeling, which I’ve found to be very true. We’re always modeling people we admire—for good or for bad. Most of the time it’s probably even subconscious. Modeling is not copying, it’s simply gleaning habits and insights from people who either have what we want, or people who we spend a lot of time with. From my mentor at Ernst & Young to my current coaches, having mentors and role models is critical to success.
Sometimes mentorship is a one-to-many business model from people who you admire. Marie Forleo has had a huge impact on me. She doesn’t do one-on-one coaching, instead I took her courses and watched her free videos. That’s the model I use now with the people who I coach and mentor. It works works for my personality and I like that I can reach more people.
I also like to remind people that since we’re always modeling, to be mindful about who you spend the most time with.
Jim Rohn famously said that we are the average of the five people we spend the most time with. That doesn’t mean that you have to break up with friends, just be mindful that you’re around positive people who lift you up and want the best for you.
At what point did you realize that your business model was one that you could use as a base for other wellness professionals to grow theirs?
Teaching people about online business was a really natural fit for me. As my own business started to grow I started to get a lot of emails and questions to my contact form about what I was doing. I’ve always been happy to share and don’t keep any secrets. The more it grew the more I needed structure to I put it all into an online course so I wasn’t always tied to my computer. I also want to model knowing what I’m worth to people.
I give a ton of information out for free, but at some point we have to charge for our time and resources. That’s also why I love online programs; I can pack so much value into one course that people pay way less for than if we did it one on one. Once I figured out how to teach online courses, I integrated the product line from my direct sales company into one of my programs. Combining the value of the product with the value of the content in my program helped me grow to one of the companies top associates.
If you could change just one thing in the wellness industry, what would it be?
Great question! Probably the idea of absolutes. When I hear bloggers say that one way of eating is THE ONLY WAY or EVERYONE SHOULD DO THIS or THE ONE THING it makes me cringe. Nothing is black and white, especially when it comes to what people should and shouldn’t eat.
If you could describe 3 key values you hold in your business what would they be?
Authenticity, honesty, and making an impact. Helping people is fundamentally at my core. Nothing about me is perfect. We all have experiences that shape who we are and teach us lessons. I learn from other people’s teachings in many areas in life. My goal is always to pass on what I’ve learned about health & wellness in the hopes that it will help others. I’ve realized the more that I’m simply myself and teach what I know the more it helps people.
If you could share just one piece of wisdom to help coaches get off the ground what would it be?
Consider your business like 52 card pickup. You might have to pick up 48 cards before you find an ace. Most people quit after five, ten, or even twenty attempts. You just have to keep going.
A statistic I like to share with people is that a 1% conversion rate is considered a great conversion. If you have 100 people on your email list and one buys, you’re doing great! Even .5% is good. One out of 200 is a strong start. I had two people in my first online program and my momentum built from there.
